Mystic  Trails (3)

Justification

Int: Sheriff's Office-Next Day-8 A.M.

Narrator

"The undertaker now having taken care of the carnage out on the trail, the Sheriff was busily looking over the inventory list brought over by the bank clerk. He still couldn't explain why all those wild animals acted that way, defending his men and causing so much harm to the bad guys.

Deputy #1 (Mike)

"Sheriff...I ain't ever seen anything like that...it was like that Hawk just swooped down and plum took that guy's head off, fell off the horse, can't explain any of it?"

Sheriff

"They were definitely acting strange...like they were possessed, had to be some kind of a reason?"

Mike

"Well, whatever it was, the stage got in, and nobody got hurt!

Sheriff

"I was thinking, when the undertaker comes back over here, I want to see if I can identify any of these men by face...something just ain't right?"

Mike

"So, you think they were just all locals...dallied up like somebody else?"

Sheriff

"I don't recognize any of the marks on the horses...someone went to a lot of trouble to give these guys a false cover...nobody wanted a connection, and there is only one person that I can think of...and he's coming off of Doc's serum...wonder what he feels like telling?"

Mike

"So, that little magic girl...Tomei, she had said they be the same boys gambling in Madam Ellis's parlor?"

Sheriff

"And they seem to have an awful lot of cash on hand, for some guys that probably haven't even hit a job in a while...no doubt, everything was fronted...I'll bet my life on that!"

Mike

"So, the greased hands came from Mister Dolson...no doubting that...how ya gonna prove it?"

Sheriff

"Bingo, and doing that overnight at the Doc's...got to be falling apart pretty good for your nerves to start twitching that bad!"

Mike

"He got his delivery, and he's falling apart...must be some bank loans gone bad...didn't seem like he was a bad seed but..."

Sheriff

"I know, but them finance types let it get over their heads...then try to do some scheming to bail out...dragging everyone and everybody down with 'em!"

Mike

"So, in other words...he was planning on not getting the shipment...he expected it to fail?"

(Suddenly, there is a knock on the door.)

Sheriff

"Come in!"

Tomei comes in and walks over to the Sheriff's desk.

Sheriff

"Well, good morning young lady, and what may I help you with?"

Tomei

"Well, I did something's yesterday that I wanted you to know about..."

Sheriff

"What kind of things?"

Tomei

"I don't know...casting spells, doin rituals, spiritual request...just curious if everything worked out?"

Sheriff

"Well, I'm assuming your talking about all the strange things that were happening out on the trail?"

Tomei

"I'm sorry if it didn't work out perfectly, but it was what I visioned...I sensed..no I actually saw you getting hurt...so I decided to keep that from happening...was that okay?"

Sheriff

"Anybody that keep my old bones on the right side of this tired old sack of skin is fair blessings in my opinion...but how did you know what to do?"

Tomei

"I just called nature...the animals know what to do...the rest takes care of itself!"

Mike

"So, your the one who called...caused, whatever the hell you did, but them critters went plum crazy...you did all that?"

Tomei

"I guess, wasn't sure it was going to work...all I could do was ask?"

Sheriff kneeling down

"Well, Tomei...my Dear, it did help...heck, you saved my Men's lives...it worked..it worked perfectly!"

Tomei starts crying

"That's...that's so good to hear...thank you Sheriff!"

Sheriif

"Can I get you some tea or something?"

Tomei

"No sir, I better be off to the schoolhouse, so I better be off going..."

Sheriff giving her a hug

"Thanks again Tomei...bless your spirit and your heart...be safe now...you hear?"

Tomei waving

"Bye Sheriff!"

Sheriff to Mike

"What ever it is that that child has...I can't explain...just know that it's a force to reckon with!"

Mike

"If I didn't see it happening before my eyes, I would have said you were fibbing..."

Sheriff

"No doubt there Mike...I'd thought I's be sipping whiskey on a hot day at noon..."

Both Laughing

Narrator

"Meanwhile, at the Dolson Bank, John Dolson finally makes it back to his office from his overnight visit at the Doc's. Now, John Dolson was in a pickle, not having fixed any of his financial problems, he wasn't quite sure what direction to go in?  With all his hired help little more than food for the worms and a pending jumbo payment to J.P Morgan in Chicago, he could only ponder his next move. When a banker in 1840 makes some bad loans, the lender who honored him must cover the overage.

In cases like this, it was usually just a one time violation of the code of bankers, a creed of policy if you will, in them days you were given just one chance to pay the lender. Failure to to that meant the lender was going to have to pay someone else above him. Conditions of collateral became the issue and insurance policies were provided through the Bank Of England and subsidiaries like Wells Fargo. The easiest way to keep everyone on the right track was to never get in Mister Dolson's situation to start with! Too late for him, as the lynch mob had already been dispersed. The welcome wagon to hell they called it, and Mister Dolson had just bought a ticket for a one time ride!

Not knowing what else to do, Dolson decided to extend his time on earth a bit by asking Mister Morgan via telegraph for an emergency extension of credit. Seemed to him that it was better than just doing nothing. But still, he couldn't help thinking that perhaps an old fashioned bank robbery of his own institution should do the trick. Now all he needed was another telegram sent to an old associate in Dodge City, who would be more than happy to come and take his goodies. Happy to do the job, if the cut was right and he was asked to come do the taking!

Now the undertaker and his associates had just returned with a wagon full of corpses. He was going to stop off at the Sheriff's office for a quick visual I.D., but everyone was tired and the bodies were almost beyond a look-see anyway, so the undertaker thought it best to go through their things and get them into the ground as soon as possible. After all, these were guys who had been in and out of jail more times than the Sheriff cared to remember...at least that's what the undertaker was thinking.

The only thing the Sheriff had on his mind, was the only person who had the kind of investment in a tangled up heist like this, was John Dolson. He was just leaving the Western Union, as the Sheriff walked up, bidding him a "Good Morning", as he walked in to talk to the telegraph clerk."

Sheriff walking in

"Hey Sam, been kinda busy this morning?"

Sam the telegraph man

"More so than usual, but then the town is growing...already put out the call for another telegrapher, hope they get him over here soon, I'm needing a break here!"

Sheriff

"What about Dolson...saw him leaving, he seemed to be spending a lot of time here?"

Sam

"Well Sheriff, he is a banker...guess it's bank business, why...you interested in something?"

Sheriff

"Just trying to keep an eye on things, little investigation never hurt...anyone can have a tendency to stray if your not careful..."

Sam

"Well, by law...unless I got orders from a higher source, 'bout all I can provide is where he sent, nothing more...you know that now?"

Sheriff

"I suspect that Sam, so without them orders, what have you got for me?"

Sam

"Looks like I got two here, one to a J.P. Morgan in Chicago and another to Todd Bringam in Dodge City."

Sheriff

"Well, that was helpful...but it really doesn't tell me much of anything, now does it?"

Sam

"Sheriff, rules are rules, and I'm not losing my position by stepping out of line on a hunch...you hear me?"

Sheriff

"So, from what you tapped out, would it be fair to say that he was in a little hot water?"

Sam

"Without being too specific...bad loans and some one to come and take care of business here in town, and I ain't sayin nothing more...fair enough?"

Sheriff

"Fair enough, take care!"

Sam

"Much obliged...you too Sheriff!"

Ext: On the other side of the Oregon Trail by a stream, some outlaws out of Dodge City were watering their horses when they saw two Indian woman washing clothes.

Outlaw #1

"Morning ladies, anyone here speak English?"

Indian woman shaking head saying, "No".

Outlaw #2

"Where are you men folk, don't tell me you gals all by yourselves?"

Both women start pointing toward the direction of Dolson.

Outlaw #1

"Thank you dear, always like someone to tell us where the action is around here!

Outlaw #2

"If you two still around...maybe we can keep you company tonight..."

Both laughing and shooting guns into the air as they leave.

Int: Tomei sitting in kitchen with Madam Ellis.

Tomei

"Miss Ellis, these are good...can I ask you, how did you ever get here?"

Madam Ellis

"Oh girl, things happen, one moment you get an itching to do theater and next moment your just entertaining whoever shows up...next thing you know...you are the theater, you are the entertainment...that's show business on it's most basic level, understand?"

Tomei

"I guess, seems like what you do is kinda risky, but you keep everybody in line...they respect that you keep the men folk happy...they better that way, is that right?"

Ellis

"Men folk with wandering minds be nothing but trouble...you ever see one coming your way, don't look scared, let them know that your a mess they not reckon with, you hear me?"

Tomei

"Yes Mam, I be hearing things all morning...driving me crazy!"

Ellis

"What kind of things got into your mind...is it something I should know?"

Tomei

"It's my nature calling, they want some help...kind of hard to explain...gotta go!"

Ellis

"You take care girl...do what you gotta do!"

(Scene Switch)

Shaman Indians talking up on foothill.

Tomei mounting pony, rides bareback out toward foothills.

(Translated)

Indian #1

"The Eagles are weak, bad water, no nutrition for good shell..."

Indian #2

"We ask for help, but without guide bird we find no food...she the spirit would come, I see risen dust approach, perhaps that her!"

Tomei stops her pony for a second, looking for the troubled Eagles nest, she spots male Eagle circling and see's Indians at foothill.

She places forehand on forehead of each Indian, with a blessing, she begins to chant a recovery prayer from memory.

Tomei

"Como, sutur, emo, seco, bry...atomo, wey, dryer, do mey, plea, all focus amen..."

Narrator

"She pauses and waits with hands, one on each of the Indian's foreheads, as she suddenly feels them warming. Looking down she see's the last egg in the nest start to wiggle and move.

The male Eagle finally stops circling and he too finally lands by the nest.

The paired Eagle couple briefly brush against each other, acknowledging Tomei, as their connection to a higher power, the Indians kissing her hand, not understanding what just occurred, but accepting that Tomei was the source, to the miracle of what just happened.

Tomei smiled, as she scavenged the clouds for understanding to what she just provided, and she felt the truth, she smiled peacefully and was content with her purpose.

She was with nature, and nature was within her. A pairing of one, her spirit united with the higher power, she commanded purpose, her energy pure, her goals untamed but wise!

Tomei, the young Mystic...was becoming legend!"
