MYSTIC TRAILS (8)

Stuck In The Mud

Narrator

"Judge Timmons based out of Fort Kearney wasn't going to budge with his decision of leaving the alleged criminal banker and town founder alone, free of prosecution from the masterminding of the attempted hold up of the Wells Fargo stage. But, things had changed since the occurrence of Tomei's kidnapping, and the Sheriff was hard pressed to do anything since she refused to file charges for the offence. It just left the Sheriff with no other option than to cut John Dolson loose and let him walk. This option was not sitting well with the Sheriff at all!"

Int: Sheriff's Office-8 a.m.

Sheriff sitting with Deputy Mike, talking things out over a pot of coffee.

Sheriff

"Nature...that's what all this is about...she leaves her calling card to the spirit world, while a man in our custody should be staring at a Hangman's noose!"

Deputy Mike

"Well Sheriff, at least she's okay, put a little scare into her, but can't say anything happened...heck, maybe she's got a point, we just can't see it...maybe her spirit world will give him justice...might be something slow and painful she got intended, cause taking him out quick like that...darn, he might be too good for the rope?"

Sheriff

"Well, we best get over to Doc's and cut him loose."

Deputy

"And what...let nature take it's course?"

Sheriff

"Something like that...come on!"

(Scene Switch)

Ext: Madam Ellis's Bordello-Back Corral

Tomei is preparing Argus (the newly acquired horse through the generosity of the working girls), for the ride to school. She went to strap the saddle on the almost wild Andalusian stud, as Argus got excited, knowing he would be expected to prove himself, to make her happy!

Tomei liked to take the back trails, never a straight line, giving Argus some needed running time. The long scenic route seemed to work well for both of them.

Tomei to Argus

"Oh, your so handsome, yes you are...I'm so glad you came into my life!"

Horse bouncing head in approval, making a loud whinny sound, as she feeds him an apple.

(Scene Switch)

Ext: Doc's Second Floor Living Quarters Above The Clinic

Sheriff shows up with Deputy, knocking on door.

Doc opening door

"Morning Sheriff, come to get your prisoner...still got him chained up where you left him?"

Sheriff

"Sadly...yes, come to release a free man...looks like Tomei's not going to press charges, not much I can do about it..."

Doc

"Well, like I said...he's still where you cuffed him up...probably needs to take a pee, maybe get him some bread and water...I don't know?"

Sheriff

"Guess I reckon, doesn't even seem right does it, but can't hold a man on something that nobody wants to admit happened..."

Doc

"Uh-huh, give me a second to put something on, be down in a sec!"

(Scene Switch)

Ext: Back Corral

Tomei goes to mount Argus, but the horse pushes her away.

Tomei

"What's wrong with you boy, don't you want to run...it'll make us happy?"

Tomei instantly sensed anger, hostility, revenge within Argus...the spirits had picked him to settle a debt. She attempts to grab his reins, but it was too late. Argus jumps the tall fence and is off! Tomei instantly visioned what was about to happen and felt completely helpless from the spirit world to stop Argus's obsession. The horse proceeded in a full gallop down the center of town on the main pathway. Tomei starts running after him in a hopeless pursuit to catch him!

(Scene Switch)

Int: Doc's Office

Sheriff

"Well, I guess your free to go...but you know...we all know what you did...your luck showed itself again...we'll catch up to you eventually, now have a good day!"

John Dolson

"Oh, that's all right...all this was just a big series of misunderstandings...nothing to get too bothered about...hey, thanks for the repairs Doc!"

Doc

"No problem Mister Dolson, that's what I'm here for!"

(Scene Switch)

Narrator

"Argus continues at full gallop, closing in on Doc's office. Mister Dolson leaving office, heading back over to his bank, he turns his head seeing Argus approaching him, holding up both arms, attempting to pull pistol, as horse knocks it out of his hands while running him over, knocking him to the ground.

The Sheriff and Deputy come out of Doc's office seeing Argus stopping in the middle of the pathway and head back toward Mister Dolson who is trying to retrieve pistol laying in road. The horse standing on hind-quarters, starts pouncing on Dolson with front hooves."

Sheriff to Deputy

"You know who's horse that is Mike?

Deputy attempting to corral Argus

"Whoa boy, whoa...I think it belongs to Madam Ellis...got her markings!"

Sheriff

"Well, I really hate just shooting the thing..."

Deputy

"Yea...he does look a little hell-bent on giving Mister Dolson a good stomping...doin a pretty good job too, like he's possessed or something!"

Narrator

"Finally, Mister Dolson manages to do a roll out, get's up, and scurries underneath the breezeway at the General Store and starts yelling at the Sheriff"

Mister Dolson

"What in tar are you waiting for Sheriff...that crazed animal, shoot that thing...go head...take him down!"

Sheriff laughing

"Well Dolson, give him a second to calm down, something got him all fired up...couldn't just shoot at him when you were so close, might have blown a hole in your head

Deputy

"Looks like he's already calmed down Sheriff...you know Dolson's head is so hard, bullet would probably just bounce off!"

Horse walking around, pawing hooves into dirt, trying to look under breezeway.

Tomei comes running up

"Oh Sheriff, I'm so sorry, is everyone all right?"

Sheriff

"I guess it depends on who you ask...now for take Mister Dolson under there, the man hidden under the breezeway shaking for his life...he might have a different opinion."

Tomei looking under building

"What's he doing under there?"

Sheriff pointing

"Right under there, healing his wounds..."

Deputy

"And his pride..."

Sheriff

"That, too...that horse damn near stomped him to death!"

Mister Dolson yelling

"Get rid of that thing right now, you hear me...I demand my rights!"

Sheriff

"Dolson, whatever occurred is not occurring now, I think the horse will be just fine!"

Horse just standing in middle of pathway.
Tomei goes over and grabs reins, starts walking him around, running her hands through his mane.

Tomei yelling under breezeway

"Mister Dolson, are you okay?"

Dolson

"I'll be okay when we make horse steaks out of that menace, I command you to shoot that horse this instant!"

Sheriff

"No such doing, Tomei, would you mind escorting that horse back to his stables young lady?"

Tomei

"Most assuriedly Sheriff...guess Argus got a bit of hate for that man...trying to take care of things...put a little scare in him!"

Sheriff

"Just curious, but would this have anything to do with that spirit world you were speaking about?"

Tomei

"Kind of...like everything...I never know who they might pick on to do their dirty work...'bout all I can offer at this point..."

Dolson sticking head out from breezeway

"I'm going to mandate that that horse be destroyed for attempted murder, you understand me?"

Sheriff

"Now Dolson, gonna be kinda hard to prove that without any witnesses right?"

Dolson

"But, you were standing right there, you saw the whole thing...so was the Deputy."

Sheriff

"Hey Mike, did you see anything?"

Deputy

"I don't recall seeing a darn thing Sheriff!"

Sheriff

"Well, there you see...looks like your word against the horse...and I'm not too sure he's going to say anything...looks like a stand off for the courts to decide...if you brought him plenty of carrots he might testify, but I wouldn't bet my life on it!

Tomei

"Argus likes Apples, but you know...change is good...I'm just glad nobody got hurt!"

Deputy looking at horse close up

"Sheriff, this horse looks perfectly fine to me, can't figure out what your talking about Mister Dolson!"

Tomei mounting horse

"Guess I'll be going, don't wanna be late for school...you'all take care!"

Galloping off

Sheriff laughing

"Hey Dolson, your going to stay under there all day, looks awfully dusty...maybe I can get Bob to bring you some lemonade when he opens the store...of course that's assuming you speak nice to him...that attitude of your is just not neighborly..."

Dolson

"Just leave me alone, you haven't heard the last of this!"

Sheriff

"Well, please excuse us, got work to do this morning, got to get back to the office...we'll be seeing you..."

Deputy

"Yea, don't be a stranger!"

(Scene Switch)

Int: Fort Kearney-Justice Office

Narrator

"Judge Timmons reading a demand notice regarding the prosecution of John Dolson's attempt to rob the Wells Fargo stage months earlier. The Sheriff was pointing out that he had already known about the cover-up regarding J.P. Morgan and the game was up. If he didn't reconsider the case then he would take a field trip to see some members of the new attorneys above him in Washington. However, if Judge Timmons decided to simply allow prosecution, nothing would ever be said about anything. Judge Timmons scratching his long beard."

Judge Timmons talking to clerk

"You know, in a man's life, at some point...we must break down and say we made a few mistakes along the way."

Clerk

"You mean like miscalculations...not you Judge right?"

Judge Timmons

"I'm just a man of law, but I'm still a man...capable of being manipulated by the best of them...I stand accused myself for my selfishness and misjudgment...I just hope the good Lord sees to forgive me for my selfishness!"

Clerk

"So, what are you going to do?"

Judge Timmons

"I'm lifting the restriction...it's time to prosecute...this banker Dolson has simple out grew his britches on this one...it's time to bring him in!
